Each day whilst we are all in Lockdown we will recall a famous match from the current day thanks to Saints Heritage Society.
16 APRIL – 1966
Challenge Cup semi-final: St. Helens 12-5 Dewsbury at Station Road, Swinton.
The Yorkshiremen threatened to de-rail Saints’ hopes of a Challenge Cup final, with a ‘spirited’ performance.
But the highlight was one St.Helens fan, Minnie Cotton, who took umbrage at the treatment metered out to her Lodger, Saints’ second-rower John Warlow and ran onto the pitch with a borrowed umbrella!
Thankfully, the only damage done was to the umbrella and Len Killeen produced a match-winning 2 try and 3 goal performance to pull his team out of the mire as Minnie is led off the field at Station Road, with Frankie Barrow offering words of solace [pictured].
