On This Day: Saints beat Sheffield in 1999

Each day whilst we are all in Lockdown we will recall a famous match from the current day thanks to Saints Heritage Society.

APRIL 18 – 1999!

Super League Round 6: Saints 39-30 Sheffield Eagles at Knowsley Road.

Definitely not one for the feint-hearted, this one! Saints had a two point lead at half-time [22-20] but gradually over-powered their South Yorkshire opponents with tries from Kevin Iro, Tony Stewart, Keiron Cunningham, Sonny Nickle, Apollo Perelini and young Paul Wellens, from the bench.

Scrum-half Sean Long kicked 7 goals, in front of over 9,000 fans at Knowsley Road to keep his team on top of the table on the way to a Grand Final success later that season.
