Each day whilst we are all in Lockdown we will recall a famous match from the current day thanks to Saints Heritage Society.
20th APRIL – 1977
First Division: St. Helens 49-2 Leigh at Knowsley Road.
Left centre Eddie Cunningham roared in for three tries and repeated the performance in the next match, with a dazzling hat-trick against Castleford at Wheldon Road!
Eddie, a member of one of rugby league’s most famous families, had bull-like strength to break through a raft of tacklers when his progress seemed surely to be halted! He was effective both in the centres and back-row, and a real handful, as this image above of him playing against Wigan at Central Park shows.
