On This Day: Saints beat Widnes – 1981!

Each day whilst we are all in Lockdown we will recall a famous match from the current day thanks to Saints Heritage Society.

21 APRIL 1981

First Division: St. Helens 24-9 Widnes at Knowsley Road.

Second rower George Nicholls played his last game for Saints at the end of a stellar career, ironically against his home town club.

George had the full-range of skills and was superb in both attack and defence and a worthy inclusion in the Saints’ Greatest 17 in 2010.

Apart from his many accomplishments at club level, with over 270 appearances in the red vee, he was also one of the most enigmatic players at Test match level in the 1970s too.

Can you name the team that took to the field on this day?
