On This Day: Saints beat Lancaster in 1904

Each day whilst we are all in Lockdown we will recall a famous Saints moment from the current day thanks to Saints Heritage Society.

23rd APRIL – 1904

Division Two: St. Helens 35-2 Lancaster 2 at Knowsley Road.

Saints’ promotion hopes remained on track, although it took a special ‘Test match’ against Holbeck to ensure our return to the top flight.

This game was also designated as the Thomas Foulkes benefit match. A powerful full-back, from Thatto Heath, he had played for the club before the formation of the Northern Union in 1895 and skippered the team in the first-ever Challenge Cup final, against Batley two years later.
