On This Day: Cliff Watson was born – 1940!

Each day whilst we are all in Lockdown we will recall a famous Saints moment from the current day thanks to Saints Heritage Society.

26th April 1940

Iron man front-rower Cliff Watson [Heritage Number #774] was born in Stepney, London.

The family moved to Cliff’s father’s birthplace, Dudley, in the West Midlands, during the Blitz, where he later played for Dudley Kingswinford RUFC.

Cliff answered a national newspaper advert to come to Knowsley Road for a trial and the rest is history.

He went on to make 373 appearances for St Helens RFC and played 30 times for Great Britain, a fantastic achievement.

Cliff is seen third from the left on the front row, with his arm round another great Saint, Tom van Vollenhoven, during the Greatest 17 celebrations in 2010.
