Each day whilst we are all in Lockdown we will recall a famous Saints moment from the current day thanks to Saints Heritage Society.
2 June 1996…
1996 Super League round 10: St. Helens 52-10 Paris St. Germain at Knowsley Road.
The visitors were the first team from France to take part in a league match in St. Helens and the first meeting of a French club in the town for 25 years, with the last cross-Channel clash being against St. Gaudens in 1971, when we ran riot to the tune of 62-0, with Tony Karalius and Alan Whittle each scoring an hat-trick.
This time around, former Balmain second-rower Derek McVey scored a brace of tries for the Saints at a sun-baked Knowsley Road.
The image shows Apollo Perelini taking on the French defence in typical style.
‘Allez Saints’!
