Highlights and Reaction: Saints Women dominant in win over Castleford!

St Helens Women returned to action on Monday evening for the first time since their Challenge Cup triumph over York City Knights last month and beat Castleford 38-6 at Odsal. Watch the highlights below.

Saints took a second minute lead, a mistake from the Tigers at the kick off gave Saints great field position, two sets later and Rebecca Rotheram found Carrie Roberts with a smart pass and our centre powered her way over from close range. Beth Stott added the conversion from the right touchline, 6-0 Saints led.

That lead was extended nine minutes later. Castleford fumbled a high Saints kick and Danielle Bush reacted quickest to pounce on the loose ball and score in the left corner. Stott’s conversion was wide, 10-0.

Another Saints try came just before the midpoint of the first half, we went down the short-side and Emily Rudge forced her way over a Castleford defender before planting the ball down, Stott’s conversion went wide, 14-0.

The Saints lead was further extended in the 33rd minute. Paige Travis put Roberts through a gap, she fought off a challenge before stepping past the Castleford fullback to score underneath the sticks! Stott added the extras from in front of the sticks, 20-0 Saints led as we went into the break after a great first half performance from Derek Hardman’s side.

Rudge then had her second try of the game in the 45th minute. The second rower was put through a gap and stumbled her way over the line despite Cas’ best efforts to stop her. Stott added the extras, 26-0 Saints led.

Castleford did grab a consolation in the 52nd minute though, Hailey Swann finding her way over the line. Tara Jane Stanley added the extra two to make it 26-6.

Saints had the next try though, two minutes before the hour mark. Emily Rudge made the break and she found Amy Hardcastle on her outside who wasn’t going to be caught. Stott’s conversion was good, 32-6. Another Saints try closely followed, Jodie Cunningham passed to Chantelle Crowl as she slipped, and Crowl wasn’t to be stopped from close range. Stott added the extras, 38-6 to the Saints and that is how it finished, as Saints returned to action with a dominant performance at Odsal.
