Academy beat Bulls: Report and Highlights

The Saints travelled over to the Pennines with a side featuring four debutants, but you’d never have known it as they dominated their hosts. Watch the highlights below.

The game was only 6 minutes old when Jumah Sambou, putting in yet another solid performance, scored the opener.

Strong drives from Cole Appleby and George Delaney set the play up. When Ellis Archer was stopped short quick thinking from Ethan Bradbury at the play the ball put Sambou diving in at the corner.

Shay Martyn kicked the first of his 7 from the touchline.

The Saints then went back-to-back with Sambou again to the fore as he and his centre partner Rio Corkhill drove the Saints away from their line.

Appleby and Alfie Pyke continued the steam-rollering and on the last Dan Ganson’s cross kick was fumbled under pressure from Sambou leaving Ellis Archer to pick up and touch down.

On quarter time the Bulls threatened with a run from a ball steal but the move broke down. Five tackles later Bradbury was turning the ball inside for Appleby to terrorise the fullback into trying to stop him 10 metres out.

On 25 minutes two massive hits from Kal Devine along with Delaney forced the error from the Bulls and the Saints survived.

On the stroke of the break the Saints extended their lead. Daniel Moss’s grubber was going dead but an error from the fullback saw him play it before it bounced. He was sin-binned for dissent for disagreeing and the Saints took full advantage of the numerical advantage.

Two drives sucked the cover in then quick hands from Moss and Keppel saw Martyn go over in the corner. He kicked his third touchline conversion and fourth in total for a 24-point lead.

The Saints started the second half as they did the first with back-to-back scores which effectively put the game to bed after only 5 minutes.

Firstly, Corkhill intercepted and raced 95 meters to the posts. Then secondly Sambou’s audacious offload put McKenzie Buckley and then Archer away on a 60-metre run. The ball was played left and after Devine had had a brain explosion ignoring a 6 to none overlap, Bradbury jumped over at dummy half.

The Bulls got a fortunate bounce to score under the posts, but an immediate knock on in the restart set saw Delaney go on a 30-metre run and Corkhill, now operating at hooker, fell over the line from dummy half.

The number of injuries and interchanges disrupted the Saints rhythm and the last quarter became very scrappy.

The Bulls got another consolation try, but this was after Ellis Keppel had stopped a certain try in the corner with a magnificent cover tackle knocking the winger almost into the stand.

The last act saw Reece Sumner complete the scoring the Saints eighth try of the night.
