Highlights and Reaction: Dominant Saints Women beat Featherstone

St Helens Women continued their impressive season, beating Featherstone Rovers Ladies 78-0 at Victoria Park on Sunday afternoon. Watch the highlights below.

Saints took a fifth minute lead in Warrington, Rebecca Rotheram finding Carrie Roberts who avoided a Featherstone tackle to score in the corner, as the two linked up similar to how they did at Castleford last Monday evening. Beth Stott’s conversion attempt from the right touchline went narrowly wide, 4-0 Saints led.

The lead was added to a few minutes later. After a break downfield by Emily Rudge was halted by a last ditch Rovers tackle, Saints threw the ball right and Jodie Cunningham threw a dummy before scoring. Stott’s conversion was good, 10-0 to the Saints.

Another try was imminent. Rudge made another big break downfield but this time she had Chantelle Crowl on her inside and our prop strolled in underneath the sticks. Stott added the extras, 16-0. Crowl had her second shortly before the midpoint of the first half. Jodie Cunningham made a big break down the field and Crowl once again supported well to score underneath the sticks. Stott added the extras, 22-0 Saints led.

Roberts then grabbed her second try of the game. Leah Burke blocked a Featherstone kick on the last before collecting the loose ball, later in the set Cunningham found Roberts down the right-hand side and she made the most of a big gap in the visitors defence. The kick went wide, 26-0. The lead was once again extended on the half-hour mark. Amy Hardcastle finding Danielle Bush on the left wing, and she ran 40 metres to score before a Featherstone defend could get close to her. Stott’s conversion went wide, 30-0.

Rebecca Rotheram then grabbed her first try of the game as we entered the final few minutes before the break. A mazy run ended with her rounding the fullback to score underneath the sticks. Stott added the extras, as Saints entered the break with a 36-0 lead.

Saints continued their dominance in the first minute of the second half, Cunningham with the break, she found Zoe Harris, and the number six fought off a Featherstone defender to score under the sticks. Stott converted, 42-0. It was Cunningham who then grabbed her second in the 44th minute. Another great carry close to the Featherstone line where the defenders were unable to stop our captain. Stott again adding the extras from in front of the sticks, 48-0.

Rudge then added her name to the long list of scorers for the Saints. A break downfield from Burke almost saw her grab a length of the pitch try. After the tackle was made though, Featherstone struggled to get back, which allowed Rudge to stroll in under the sticks. Stott added the extras, 54-0.

Our eleventh try of the game came on the hour mark. We moved the ball from left to right and it ended with Harris finding Roberts, and she then found Rachael Woosey who strolled in at the right wing. Stott’s conversion went wide, 58-0. Roberts did then complete her hat-trick as Saints closed in on another win. She was given the ball with space to run into and despite Rovers’ best efforts to stop her she managed to force her way over. Stott missed the conversion, 62-0.

A few minutes later and it was time for Cunningham to complete her hattrick. Another mazy run allowed Cunningham to break, she then ran half the length of the pitch and rounded the fullback to grab her third try of the game. Stott added the extras from in front of the sticks, 68-0. There was still enough time for Rudge to grab her second try of the game, another one where she was put through a gap and her pace was too much for the visitors to stop. Harris took over the kicking duties and she added the extras from in front of the sticks, 74-0.

Saints added their final try with almost the final play of the game, Burke collecting a Hardcastle pass to stroll over in the left corner. Stott re-claimed the kicking duties but hit the outside of the post, as Saints won 78-0 in a dominant performance at Victoria Park.
