Academy beat Bradford: Report and Highlights

Saints Academy defeated Bradford Bulls at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Sunday and you can watch the highlights and read the match report below.

Shay Martyn opened the Saints account on their first possession. Captain Harry Brooks‘ drive put the Saints on the front foot and as the ball was wept left Sam Haynes’ quick pass set the winger on the go. He stepped inside three defenders before showing a clean pair of heels to the chasers to the posts.

The Saints doubled their advantage after a great chase to Dan Ganson’s last tackle kick saw the Bulls trapped in goal.

Four tackles on from the resultant drop out McKenzie Buckley stretched out to put the ball down for the try.

The Saints third in the opening ten minutes came courtesy of a 20-metre touchline dash from Man of the Match Rio Corkill.

An exit set led by drives from Brooks and George Delaney saw the Bulls back pedalling and when the ball was fed to the right on the fifth Jonathon Bennison just popped his hand through and it was his backhand flip which put Corkill clear.

The foot was taken off the gas and the visitors took full advantage with two tries in a five-minute period either side of quarter time.

The Saints finally wrenched back control on the half hour.

Eliot Peposhi’s break down the middle was followed by Bennison who took the final pass at the line to go over.

On the whistle for the break the Saints took what proved to be an unassailable lead.

Drives out of defence from Corkill and Bennison and a blind side dummy half pass from Ethan Bradbury saw Alfie Whittle go 60 metres down the right before stepping inside the fullback to the sticks.

The Saints should have opened the scoring in the second half too but a three man overlap down the left was ignored and with the help of another penalty it was the Bulls who crossed to narrow the gap.

Martyn’s dive in at the left corner on the last saw the lead restored. It was lengthened 10 minutes later as Bennison got his second down the right.

Bradford hit back with two more tries, but the Saints came away with the win.
