Saints matchday parking available on council operated car parks

Saints fans can park for free on the majority of town centre car parks ahead of matchday at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Story Updated: 24.02.22

St Helens Borough Council has been in consultation with St Helens R.F.C. to find new parking options.

The following council-run surface car parks and all pay & display locations will be free to use from 5.45pm for matchday parking:

  • Birchley Street
  • Central Street
  • Cotham Street
  • Mill Street
  • North John Street
  • Parr Street
  • Tolver Street
  • Ward Street
  • Waterloo Street

The only chargeable council-operated car park is the Tontine multistorey carpark in Exchange Street – which normally closes shortly after Church Square Shopping Centre at 6:00pm. This will be accessible throughout the season at a small charge of £1.50 per vehicle (payable at the P&D machines by cash or card) to cover operating costs.

Tontine car park will be locked promptly at 11:00pm.  Any vehicles remaining on Tontine car park after this time will be securely locked in overnight and can be collected from 8:00am the following morning at no extra charge.

Pedestrian access from/to Tontine car park will be via the external staircase only on Chalon Way, making this an unsuitable car park for anyone with mobility problems.

Please note that the free parking offer does not apply at the World of Glass Museum, close to the stadium, which is operated privately.

  • £1 – over 2 hours

Sunday matches

All council-run car parks and pay & display locations are free to use on Sundays.

Hardshaw Centre roof top car park will be accessible via the shopping centre lifts only while the shopping centre is open; after that access is via The Needle staircase onto Hall Street only.

Tontine multi story car park will be accessible via the shopping centre lifts only while the shopping centre is open – the car park is locked 30 minutes after the shopping centre closes until 8am the following morning.

Current opening hours for the shopping centres are 10am to 4pm but please check signage for any changes to these times on the day of your visit.

Councillor Richard McCauley, Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration, said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer fans free parking on the majority of our council car parks, which will be open for free from two hours before kick-off until after the end of the match. We hope by opening them up earlier fans will want to use the time to come in advance and support our town centre businesses in advance of the game.

“We know that on a typical match day we would have around 200 cars on the car park, rising towards 600 for local derbies. While Chalon Way was our closest location to the ground the vast majority of our town centre car parks are only a short walk from the ground. We know that if everyone follows the rules and we can help keep Covid-19 rates down Saints fans will hopefully be back in the Totally Wicked Stadium at some level from May and we’re prepared for when that great day comes.”

St.Helens R.F.C. General Manager, Dave Hutchinson said: “When we heard the car park at Chalon Way was being demolished we were naturally worried about how this would affect our fans on matchdays.

“But we are grateful to the council for opening up a number of open-air car parks across the town for are fans to park for free. This kind gesture will hopefully encourage more fans to come and watch us play at the Totally Wicked Stadium once government restrictions allow.”
