Saints make it three from three after resilient victory over Wakefield!

Saints made it three wins from three in Super League after a 20-4 win against Wakefield Trinity on Friday evening!

Saints’ highly praised line speed in defence showed in the first five minutes, as they forced Trinity to a goal-line drop-out after a tackle led by Konrad Hurrell. The visitors collected that drop-out though as they opted to gamble and kick it short, so Saints failed to take advantage.

The first try did come for the hosts though shortly after. The referee ruled a Wakefield pass forward as they broke downfield, Saints then had a scrum in the visitors territory and a few tackles later a flowing move from right to left ended with Jack Welsby finding Mark Percival who strolled over in the left corner. Tommy Makinson, back on kicking duties, was unable to convert, 4-0.

Saints thought they had their second try of the half as we approached the half-hour mark as Makinson stepped his way over the line, however referee Aaron Moore ruled that there had been an obstruction so instead awarded the visitors a penalty.

The second try wasn’t far behind though. A massive break down the left wing from Makinson had put Saints in great field position. After being held up by a few tackles from a resilient Wakefield defence, skipper James Roby spotted a gap from dummy half to pounce and score from close range. Makinson added the extras from the left touchline, 10-0.

A third try was only two minutes away. A great move down the left-hand side once again saw Makinson make a good break down the wing, he brilliantly kicked the ball forward and Percival picked it up to score his second try of the game. Makinson added the extra two to make it 16-0 in Saints favour.

Wakefield responded just before the break and in truth they deserved it. An early kick caught Saints out and Tom Johnstone won the race to score in the left-hand corner. Max Jowitt’s conversion attempt hit the post, 16-4.

Saints’ fourth try of the first half almost followed as Lewis Dodd showed some great footwork near the line but he was held up by the recovering Wakefield defence. That was the final action of the first half, as Saints led a resiliant Wakefield Trinity team 16-4 at the break at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Agnatius Paasi made an impact at the start of the second half as he broke through some tackles before finding an offload to Dodd, he then found Sione Mata’utia, who was stopped and as he got up to try and play the ball he had multiple defenders around him but the referee judged that he had fumbled the ball.

Our fourth try of the game eventually came in the 62nd minute. The ball was worked out to the right edge and ended up in Josh Simm’s hands, he then beat the Wakefield defence to squeeze in at the right corner. Makinson just missed the conversion attempt, 20-4 Saints led.

Four minutes from time David Fifita was sent to the sin bin for a late hit on Dodd as Saints looked to further extend their lead with a flowing move. Two minutes later Curtis Sironen was then sent to the sin bin for Saints for a high shot, both sides ending the game with 12-men. K

Konrad Hurrell almost grabbed his second Saints try in the final 30 seconds after collecting an Alex Walmsley pass and breaking downfield, however the ball was stripped away from him as he stepped inside!

Saints broke again with the final play of the game but were unable to score, as they beat Wakefield Trinity 20-4 at a cold Totally Wicked Stadium on Friday evening.
