Ruthless Saints march on after big victory over Hull KR!

The Champions made it four wins in a row after a ruthless 42-8 victory over Hull KR on Friday evening at the Sewell Group Craven Park.

Saints took an early lead in East Yorkshire. Hull KR were caught offside which allowed Lewis Dodd to kick for touch, Saints tried to break through the Robins defence, but were unsuccessful until Steve Prescott Man of Steel leader Sione Mata’utia powered over from close range. Tommy Makinson added the conversion, 6-0.

Konrad Hurrell was then sent to the sin bin for a late hit as Rovers looked to get back into the game.

Hull KR made their man advantage count. A cut-out pass by former Saint Lachlan Coote found Ryan Hall on the left wing and he slid over to score in the corner. Jordan Abdull missed the conversion, so Saints still led 6-4.

We then extended our lead just before the half-hour mark.Β  After sustained pressure on the Rovers line the ball was worked out left and that ended with Jack Welsby finding Makinson who sprinted before sliding along the floor to score in the corner, his 150th try for the Red Vee. He converted his own try to make it 12-4.

Our third try quickly followed. Following a break downfield it resulted in great field positions for the visitors. From under the sticks, skipper James Roby threw the ball left to Dodd, who made a great step to open up space and score. Makinson once again added the extras, 18-4.

The Saints had their fourth try of the half in the final minute. A grubber kick from Welsby found its way to Dodd, he then kicked the ball and won the race to ground it and score. Makinson once again converted the try, as we led 24-4 after the first half.

It did not take long in the second half for our lead to be further extended. A Jonny Lomax pass close to the Robins line was collected by Mata’utia and he powered his way over from close range for his second. Makinson missed the conversion, 28-4. Jez Litten was then sin binned for the hosts for what appeared to be dissent.

We took further advantage of the extra man, a flowing move down the left ended with Man of the Match Mata’utia throwing a cut-out pass for Makinson who grabbed his second try of the game. Makinson converted his own try from the left touchline, 34-4.

Our seventh try came in the 64th minute. Lomax with a chip over the top which Hull KR allowed to bounce and Alex Walmsley gathered the loose ball and went over the Will Dagger to score. Makinson’s conversion hit the post, 38-4.

The hosts grabbed a consolation late on as they collected a high kick to score in the corner through Frankie Halton. Abdull missed the conversion, 38-8.

Saints made sure they had the last try of the evening though. A grubber kick to the left corner was not dealt with by Hull KR, Makinson putting his hand on the loose ball to complete his hat-trick. His conversion attempt went narrowly wide, but it meant little as Saints emerged as hugely impressive 42-8 victors in East Yorkshire.
