Relentless Saints continue unbeaten start with win over Warrington!

The reigning Champions made it five wins from five, with a dominant 28-2 victory over the Warrington Wolves on Friday evening in front of a crowd of over 16,000 at the Totally Wicked Stadium!

After a scrappy opening few minutes of the game, Warrington had the chance to put the first points on the board, winning a penalty from in front of the sticks after a Saints high tackle. Stefan Ratchford picked himself up and slotted the ball over to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Just minutes later Saints were reduced to 12-men for 10 minutes as Sione Mata’utia was adjudged to have hit George Williams after the ball had gone.

At the mid-point of the first half, Saints had a chance to level the scores as we were awarded a penalty just inside the Warrington 40. Tommy Makinson made no mistake and that levelled the score at 2-2. Another player was sent to the sin bin two minutes later, this time for the visitors, as George Williams saw yellow after persistent offsides.

Saints then grabbed the first try of the evening. Jonny Lomax had the ball near the line and danced around one challenge before putting in a perfectly weighted kick to the corner under pressure. Jack Welsby won the race to ground the ball in the right corner and the try was awarded after a video referee review. Makinson added a great conversion from the right touchline, 8-2 Saints led.

A second Saints try came before the break. The ball was worked to Lewis Dodd in the middle of the pitch, he turned back to where the ball had came from and found Mark Percival. He offloaded the ball under pressure to Makinson who strolled in the left corner. He could not convert his own try, 12-2 was the score as we went in ahead at the break.

With defences dominating the opening stages of the second period, Joey Lussick went the closest being held up over the line. Later on that set our third try did arrive though. A flowing move from right to left ended with Welsby throwing a great cut-out pass to find Makinson, he then broke past a Wire defender before scoring in the corner. He couldn’t add the extras, 16-2.

Saints’ fourth try came off the back of a Warrington knock on. From the scrum the ball found Percival down the left side and he ran around a defender to score to the left of the sticks. Lewis Dodd took over goal-kicking duties and nailed it from the left touchline, 22-2.

Our final try of the game came three minutes from time. Wire fumbled a pass near their own line which allowed Lomax to stroll over underneath the sticks. Dodd added the extras, 28-2.
