Saints beat Hull KR on Roby’s big day!

Saints have re-claimed their four point gap at the top of the Betfred Super League table after beating Hull KR 26-18 as James Roby made history.

Roby moved top of the all-time Super League appearance charts on Sunday, after making his 455th Super League appearance to surpass Kevin Sinfield’s Sinfield record.

He was given a guard of honour by both teams and it was fitting that he crowned our win with a try of his own!

Before that, it was a dream start for the Saints. Jack Welsby chipped a kick towards the Hull KR left edge, the ball was allowed to bounce and was claimed by Konrad Hurrell, he threw the ball infield and it found Will Hopoate who escaped a tackle to find Tommy Makinson who dove over to open the scoring. Makinson’s kicked looked to have gone over but the touch judges said otherwise, 4-0.

Welsby was then sent to the sin bin after he stopped Hull KR from taking a quick tap after they had caught the ball in-goal. The Robins took advantage of their extra man, as former Saints Lachlan Coote spotted a gap from close range and planted the ball down to score. Coote converted, 6-4 the visitors led.

James Roby then crowned his big day with good solo effort from close range. The skipper looked like he wanted to pass the ball left before changing his mind, spotting a gap and powering his way over underneath the sticks. Makinson converted, 10-6 we led.

The lead was increased a few minutes later as Alex Walmsley threw a great pass to Morgan Knowles who dove underneath the sticks to score. Makinson converted, 16-6 we led.

Hull KR replied again shortly after as Coote found Ryan Hall who squeezed over in the corner. Coote converted from the left touchline, 16-12.

Seconds before the hooter went Matt Parcell was sent to the sin bin for the visitors for trying to slow down the play-the-ball as the Robins looked to survive until the break, from the resulting penalty we took the two and Makinson kicked it to give us an 18-12 lead at the break.

Saints took advantage of their extra man early on in the second half. Hurrell made a powering break downfield to put Saints on the front foot, from the play-the-ball Welsby put in a great kick behind the Robins defence and Ben Davies won the race to score. Makinson missed the conversion, 22-12 Saints led.

Saints added their fifth try with just over 15 minutes to go. Jonny Lomax made a break down the Saints left before being tackled, from the tackle Saints threw it from right to left before it eventually found Hurrell who threw a dummy to stroll in to the right of the sticks. Makinson missed, 26-12.

Former Saint Coote scored the final try of the game with three minutes to go after collecting a grubber kick to score next to the sticks. He converted his own try but it wasn’t enough as Saints beat Hull KR 26-18 on a special day for Captain James Roby.
