It's time for the Betfred Super League Grand Final, as the Saints take on Leeds Rhinos, with a chance to lift our history making fourth consecutive Super League crown.
BACKGROUND
St Helens are on the verge of history. If they beat Leeds Rhinos at Old Trafford on Saturday night, they will become the first team in Super League history to win four consecutive Super League titles. This will also be Saints 10th Super League triumph if they can lift that trophy again!
Both of this year’s Grand Finalists share the current record of three consecutive Super League titles, with the Rhinos winning their trio of titles against Saturday’s opponents, St Helens, in 2007, 2008 & 2009.
No team is more familiar with the Grand Final than St Helens. Over the past 24 years, Saints have appeared in the most Grand Finals and will this year extend their own appearances record to 14.
It’s been 11 years since St Helens and Leeds Rhinos last met in a Grand Final – the Rhinos beat St Helens 32-16 back in 2011 when Leeds again finished the regular season in fifth. Four of St Helens current squad played in that match – skipper James Roby, Tommy Makinson, Jonny Lomax and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook all now have the chance to avenge that defeat 11 years ago.
Outside of their Grand Final meetings, St Helens have had the upper hand over Leeds Rhinos in recent times – the Rhinos have failed to beat Saints in their last 11 meetings, with Leeds last beating St Helens on 16 March 2018.
In total, St Helens have won 43 meetings against Leeds in Super League, whilst the Rhinos have defeated Saints 32 times.
Since the Rhinos last beat St Helens in 2018, the Saints have won three Grand Finals – two of those coming under current head coach Kristian Woolf. Woolf has the chance to become the first coach to win three Super League Grand Finals in a row – in what will be his final game in charge at the club.
