Squad for Saints’ trip to Giants

Paul Wellens has named an initial 20-man squad for Thursday night’s Betfred Super League fixture against Huddersfield Giants which kicks off at the John Smith’s Stadium at 8pm.

The Saints will be appealing the decision of Morgan Knowles’ one-match penalty notice received from the Match Review Panel following St Helens’ victory over Hull FC last Friday night. The loose forward was charged with a Grade B ‘Dangerous Contact’ offence for an incident that occurred in the 71st minute of the game.

As it stands, Knowles is set to miss Thursday night’s match in Huddersfield against the Giants.

An independent tribunal hearing is scheduled for Tuesday night where the Club will appeal the decision. Following the result of the hearing, if Knowles’ ban is overturned he will be added to the squad declaration, but if it is unsuccessful another Saints player will be added to Thursday night’s team.

Morgan Knowles’ one match ban has been upheld, you can read more on that news by clicking here. Young outside back Wesley Bruines completes the 21-man squad and if selected will make his competitive Saints debut.

Head Coach Wellens’ side is boosted by the return of Sione Mata’utia and Konrad Hurrell after serving their two-match suspensions, and Will Hopoate is named in the squad for the first time in Super League 2023 and could make his first appearance since the World Club Challenge victory in Penrith last month.

The Red V will however be without the versatile Ben Davies, who sadly suffered an ankle injury which Paul Wellens confirmed will keep him out for around five to six weeks in recovery time.
