St Helens Head Coach Paul Wellens has named his 21-man squad for Friday night’s Betfred Super League match against Wakefield Trinity, which kicks off at the Totally Wicked Stadium at 8pm.
The Red V are looking to make it three wins in a row in the league and back-to-back victories at home. Saints secured a win at the Totally Wicked Stadium a fortnight ago in a very physical battle against Hull FC, and followed it up last Thursday night with a hard-fought defensive display to beat Huddersfield Giants.
Up next, the World Club Champions welcome Wakefield Trinity who currently sit bottom of the Super League table with no wins yet – so Mark Applegarth’s men will be desperate to get points on the board.
There are two changes to the squad that was named for the Giants game, with Morgan Knowles back available for selection after serving his one-match suspension.
Young forward McKenzie Buckley is named in the Red V’s squad declaration for the first time in 2023 too. The former Thatto Heath junior was one of seven Saints Academy players to make his senior First Team debut last April, away at Castleford. Last season Buckley made 12 appearances for our Academy and scoring five times, and also featured on four occasions for our Reserves side too.
Sione Mata’utia misses Friday match against Wakefield due to head injury protocols. The back-rower inside the first minute last Thursday night needed to leave the field and failed his head injury assessment.
Friday night could be a milestone moment for star half-back Jonny Lomax, with his next match appearance for St Helens marking 300 matches played in the Red V! A proud product of our youth programme, Lomax since making his debut back in 2009 has gone on to help Saints win five Grand Finals, four League Leaders’ Shield, one Challenge Cup, and the World Club Challenge earlier this year.
