Saints 21-man squad to take on the Wolves

Head Coach Paul Wellens has named his 21-man squad for this Thursday night’s Betfred Super League derby clash against Warrington Wolves, with kick-off at the Totally Wicked Stadium scheduled from 8pm.

Derby matches between the Saints and the Wire have only increased in intensity in recent years, with both holding high aspirations for silverware. St Helens are looking to get shake off two away day defeats and get the result against the current table toppers, who suffered their first defeat of the season last Friday night against Wigan.

With most of the forward pack unavailable for selection due to injury or suspension, a valiant fight by the Red V saw them push Hull KR at Sewell Group Craven Park last week, but ultimately falling to a 26-14 defeat.

Wellens’ squad receives a boost with the addition of Joe Batchelor for the first time in Super League 2023. In February, the England international back-rower picked up an ankle injury in St Helens’ game against St George Illawarra Dragons, which required surgery. Following his rehab, Batchelor could be in line to make his first Super League appearance of the year.

Batchelor coming in for Jake Wingfield is the only change to the squad that was declared for last week’s game. The young forward, unfortunately, misses out due to head injury protocols following a knock picked up in last Friday’s fixture.

Some of our young First Teamers have kept their place in the 21-man group and could feature on Thursday night. Baxter, Hill, and Bruines have all featured for Swinton Lions as part of our dual-registration partnership in 2023.

Both Baxter and Buckley have also featured for North Wales Crusaders on loan this season, whilst further match opportunities have also come up for Hill, Buckley, and Bruines with the Saints Reserves, with the three impressing in our dominant wins over Newcastle and Wakefield.

Daryl Powell endured a tough first season in charge of Warrington in 2022 finishing eleventh in the league table, the club’s worst-ever finish in a Super League season. Fast forward to now, with wholesale squad changes, Powell’s side are flying high and will view this game against the FOURmidable Saints as a true test of their silverware credentials this year.
