Saints squad named for Heritage Celebration game

Paul Wellens has made his 21-man squad selection ahead St.Helens taking on Leigh Leopards on Friday night at the Totally Wicked Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm.

As part of our 150th anniversary year, all season long we are celebrating the long and glorious history of our club, which was founded by William Douglas Herman in the Fleece Hotel, Church Street on the 19th of November 1873.

The World Club and Super League Champions are welcoming the Challenge Cup Winners to the home of the Red V, for what is bound to be an exciting clash with the regular season nearing its conclusion.

Our Saints have already got their spot in the play-offs secured and are firmly in a tight, three-horse race at the top of the table for the League Leaders Shield, which heading into Round 25 is only separated by points difference. Following a tough win over Wakefield last Sunday, St.Helens have won their last six matches in a row and will be looking to make it seven on Friday night.

The Leopards have had a dream 2023 season, highlighted of course by their 2023 Challenge Cup victory at Wembley in Golden Point over Hull KR. Adrian Lam’s men come to the Totally Wicked Stadium after a bizarre two-part match win over Huddersfield Giants, with the game during the second half postponed last Friday and the final half hour played on Sunday afternoon.

The main squad news heading into this fixture is that Konrad Hurrell, who had just returned to action, picked up recurrence of a calf injury on Sunday and is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks. Dan Norman late on at Wakefield suffered a head injury and is ruled out due to protocols.

Into the squad then come youngsters Matthew Foster and Wesley Bruines, both of which have featured for our Reserves outfit in 2023 who will be taking on Wigan Warriors in the coming weeks for the Reserves Grand Final – read more on that here.
