During his inaugural season at Head Coach of St Helens Women, Matty Smith has been nominated for BWSL Coach of the Year!
Smith led Saints to second place in the Betfred Women’s Super League, which secured second place and a home Semi-Final, which takes place on Saturday at the Totally Wicked Stadium and you can purchase tickets here
Saints won their third consecutive Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup success last month as well, with a 8-22 victory over Leeds Rhinos at Wembley Stadium!
Smith took over the role in December 2022 from departed Head Coach, Derek Hardman, who moved on to coach Saints’ Reserve side in the off-season.
The Saints Women boss has been nominated for the award, alongside York Valkyrie’s, Lindsay Anfield and Featherstone Rovers, Marie Colley.
Upon hearing the news, Smith said: “I am delighted to have been nominated for this award. It’s great to have been recognised for our performances this season, but It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of a great team of players and an incredible bunch of staff.
Since I first arrived in the role, I have been surrounded with good people, and have thoroughly enjoyed my first year back at the club in this position.
Getting to experience Wembley with this team was a special moment for us all, and hopefully experiences like these have made us closer as a group.
Hopefully we will see plenty of fans at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Saturday night, as we face Leeds Rhinos, looking to make it to our second final of the season!”
