Hopoate & Hurrell named in Tongan squad for England series

St.Helens players Will Hopoate and Konrad Hurrell are both named in the Tonga squad that is set to take on England in a three-Test series that starts at the Totally Wicked Stadium in October!

More history will be made at the Saints’ home ground in our 150th anniversary year when the first-ever international series between England & Tonga kicks off on Sunday, 22nd October.

Former three-time Super League winning Head Coach of St.Helens, Kristian Woolf is in charge of the Tongan national team that boasts some outstanding rugby league talent from Super League and the NRL. Tonga will bring fierce passion, with the players on the field in action, including their pre-match Sipi Tau war dance. Whilst off the field, the supporters of Tonga will create an incredible atmosphere with plenty of noise and colour around the ground.

Last October for the Rugby League World Cup 2021, the town of St. Helens was the training base for the Tongan team, hosting two of their matches at the Totally Wicked Stadium. The national side engaged with several community events such as visits to schools and were welcomed to the area with a wonderful civic reception at the town hall.

The series opening match continues to close association of the Club with the Tongan RL team. The Saints have helped to develop a series of initiatives to support Tonga in the aftermath of the devastating volcanic eruption in January 2022.

Both Hopoate and Hurrell were in the Mate Ma’a squad for last Autumn’s World Cup and will be proud to represent Tonga once more, and both have featured for Tonga or the Tonga Invitational side on twelve occasions.
