Head Coach Paul Wellens has named his 21-man squad for this Friday night’s Betfred Super League match against Castleford Tigers, which kicks off at our home the Totally Wicked Stadium at 8pm.
Now into the second half of the 2024 campaign, it’s a straight route through the remainder of the regular season period following last week’s international break. The Red V remain firmly in the hunt for the top spot in the league table, currently sat in second place but just one win behind the current leaders.
Saints are looking to shake off a very tight defeat away last time out to Salford Red Devils, which finished 20-18. This Friday the Club welcomes the Tigers to the Totally Wicked Stadium for our second meeting with the West Yorkshire team. Back in May, St.Helens secured an impressive 4-60 win at The Mend-A-Hose Jungle.
The match will also be the first time that the Red V will take to the field on our brand-new pitch which has been tirelessly worked on since our last home game back in May. The huge project sees our pitch become a high-performance, Premier League standard surface ahead of Liverpool FC Women playing their fixtures at our home stadium too!
Friday night is also the Saints’ Inclusion Round for 2024, and on match night the Club will have:
- Inclusive volunteers working with club staff, across all departments
- Saints Community Development Foundation’s (SCDF’s) Inclusive Dance Team will also be performing live on the pitch ahead of kick-off
- The Saints’ LDSL team will be playing matches on the field at half time too as part of the Community Integrated Care Learning Disability Super League

Onto the key squad news and Paul Wellens makes two changes to the squad he declared for our last Super League round with Daryl Clark stepping out due to a minor muscle tear, and Konrad Hurrell also misses Friday’s game due to a neck injury.
The Saints are boosted though with the return to the 21-man squad our Club Captain, Jonny Lomax, who suffered a hand fracture injury in our Round 12 win over Leeds Rhinos during May.
Leon Cowen is the other Saint stepping in, he has been playing in our Reserves side and has been on dual-registration in recent weeks at Swinton Lions too. Cowen is one of four Saints in Wellens’ squad that could make their debuts if selected to take on the Tigers, the others are; Jake Burns, Jonny Vaughan, and Harry Robertson.
