Mbye ban upheld, Roberts into Saints squad against Wigan

St.Helens R.F.C. and Moses Mbye have been unsuccessful in a second appeal with the Operational Rules Tribunal against a one-match penalty notice.

Mbye was issued a Grade B ‘Dangerous Contact’ charge on Monday (8th July) by the Match Review Panel following the Saints’ Round 16 Betfred Super League fixture against Castleford Tigers.

The Club appealed the charge on Tuesday night (9th July) with the Operational Rules Tribunal, but was unsuccessful. St.Helens believed there was an argument over that decision so sought to appeal again on Wednesday night (10th July), however the decision for the one-match penalty notice continued to be upheld.

Head Coach Paul Wellens announced a 20-man St.Helens squad ahead of facing Wigan Warriors away on Friday night. Following the outcome of tonight’s appeal meaning Moses Mbye will be unavailable for selection, Will Roberts has been added to complete the 21-man squad selection.

For Roberts it is the first time he has been in the First Team 21-man squad in 2024 after becoming a First Team Saint this season.

The young half-back was flying during the 2023 season for the Saints Academy, being named in the opening two Lancashire Origin squads. Saints’ dual-registration partners Swinton Lions also handed Will his professional debut in June 2023 against Batley Bulldogs, but an injury halted his season.

Will has worked hard on his rehab alongside Agnatius Paasi and made his return to the field for the first time in almost a year with St.Helens Reserves in late April. Roberts has also been featuring for Swinton on loan too in recent weeks as well, and if he were to feature for Wellens’ matchday squad he would make his senior debut!
