Matty Smith nominated for BWSL Coach of the Year

Saints' Matty Smith has been nominated for the BWSL Coach of the Year, following a dominant season for the Saints!

Its the second year running that Smith has received a BWSL Coach of the Year nomination, following a Challenge Cup triumph in 2023, alongside a second placed finish in the league table.

Smith’s Saints side have won 13 of their 14 league games in 2024, finishing on top of the table. Their only defeat of the year in all competitions coming in the opening game against York Valkyrie. They have lifted the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup and also the League Leaders’ Shield, whilst they’re also in the last four of the Betfred Women’s Super League.

Upon hearing the news, Smith said: “I am delighted to have been nominated for this award for the second consecutive year. Its been a great season for us so far having won two trophies, but we are hungry for even more.

“We have a great squad of players, and our strength in depth has also been a big positive for us this year. All of our focus is now on winning the final piece of silverware available and making sure that we do all we can to lift it come the end of the 2024 season.”

Amanda Wilkinson of Barrow Raiders and Wigan Warriors’ Denis Betts are the two other nominees for the award.

Faye Gaskin has also been nominated for the Woman of Steel award for the first time in her career. You can read more about that here.
