The St.Helens prop is on the three-man shortlist for the 2024 Betfred Super League Young Player of the Year!
Also nominated are Warrington Wolves’ Matty Nicholson and Wigan Warriors’ Junior Nsemba, and the winner will be revealed at Rugby League’s Awards Night on Tuesday, 8th October at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.
‘Saint George’ has performed remarkably for the Saints in 2024, following up on a breakthrough campaign last year.
The 20-year old made 25 match appearances for the Red V this season, playing in the middle of the field for big minutes and stepped up whilst our pack during the summer was depleted due to a large number of injuries to our senior Saints.
The former Halton Farnworth Hornets junior grabbed his first Super League try in a home clash against Castleford, bulldozing over under the posts for a classic prop forward score.
George also received his first senior international call-up for England’s mid-season test against France, and was named as 18th player for the fixture.
Since his debut in 2022 he has made 48 appearances for St.Helens, meaning he is just two short of half a century of senior matches for the Club before turning 21-years-old.
The three nominees for the 2024 Betfred Super League Young Player of the Year Award all play in the forward positions for their teams. That means the accolade will go to a forward for the first time in five years, with Delaney looking to follow in the footsteps of the last forward to be handed the award – his teammate Matty Lees. Jack Welsby was the last Saint to be named Young Player of the Year in back-to-back years in 2021 and 2022.
Members of the England Rugby League Performance Unit determine the winner, with players who were under 21 at the start of the Super League season in February being those who are eligible for selection.
Congratulations to George, and best of luck at the Awards Night!
