Sione Mata’utia confirms retirement

Saint #1260, Sione Mata'utia, has today announced his retirement from professional rugby league.

The Club said goodbye to Sione and his young family, wishing them well on their return home to Australia, and ‘Cee’ has now publicly declared that he has called time on his professional career.

Playing in the famous Red V strip of the Saints for four seasons, Mata’utia joined from NRL side Newcastle Knights from 2021 onwards, making 86 appearances, scoring 17 tries and even kicking one goal in his final home match.

An incredible athlete, Sione was a firm favourite with our supporters for is ability to play in a number of positions and perform strongly, including back-row, centre or even at prop.

Cee played an important part in the Saints’ successes during his time at the Club. Whilst he missed out on the 2021 Challenge Cup Final he helped the team get there in the Cup campaign. In 2021 he started at back-row at Old Trafford for his first Super League title, and earned his second in 2022 coming off the bench in that year’s finale.

2023 began with arguably St.Helens’ most famous victory, winning the World Club Challenge against Penrith Panthers at their home stadium. Mata’utia started at back-row and showcased his brilliance as a Saint.

The Club would like to wish Sione the very best in his next chapter, and wish him and the family well.
