St.Helens Head Coach Paul Wellens speaks to the press following the Pre-Season friendly loss to Salford Red Devils.
The match was Morgan Knowles’ Testimonial fixture, but unfortunately it ended in defeat with the Red Devils putting in a better performance.
Wellens stated that he saw bits of both good and bad in the performances, with and without the ball, but that the twenty minute periods before and after the half time break, and he stressed to his team that the team need to learn from those periods.
Whilst it was our sole Pre-Season fixture, Wellens was keen to reaffirm that the preparation for the new season is not done, with two more weeks of training before the Challenge Cup begins, and then a week after that we host Salford once more – but this time in league matters.
Revealing why the likes of Jack Welsby, Daryl Clark, Matty Lees and Alex Walmsley did not feature in the game, Wellens detailed the current health of the squad. The Saints boss revealed that he did not wish to risk them, particularly our England internationals who only finished their season in November.
Looking ahead to the Saints’ Cup and league matches, Wellens stated that the next two weeks are simply about hard work, as we head into the new season in sharper fashion.
