Injury update: Jake Wingfield

St.Helens forward Jake Wingfield will sadly require surgery for an ankle injury.

Speaking to local paper the St Helens Star, Head Coach Paul Wellens has confirmed that our #18 will be going for a syndesmosis (ankle ligaments) operation injury in the next few days.

The injury occurred during the Saints’ Betfred Super League Round 21 fixture against Wakefield Trinity last Friday night. Early in the second half, the 24-year-old needed to be helped off the field after coming on for Curtis Sironen who unfortunately failed a Head Injury Assessment (HIA).

Wingfield has been a solid performer for the Red V so far in 2025, featuring in 17 First Team matches and playing in a number of positions when called upon to put the team first.

Speaking to the Star’s Mike Critchley, Wellens said: “Jake has unfortunately done his syndesmosis and will require surgery on that. It is usually a seven to nine week return to play, which makes things very tight.

“That is not to say that all being well he couldn’t feature come Play-Off time, but there is a fair bit of work to do between now and then.

“We will put an arm around him and help him get back fit as soon as possible.”

Everyone at St.Helens R.F.C. wishes ‘Wingy’ all the best with his recovery, and we look forward to seeing him back in action.
