Left to Wright – Making a Moment

A moment like this comes along once in a generation.

The old adage is ever-present in our history. Late tries, comebacks, and achieving the unachievable. Never Write Off The Saints: a phrase we live by, and a phrase we pride ourselves on.

Almost twenty-five years to the day from a famous Wide to West try, scored in a preliminary Play-Off game, we found ourselves embroiled in another. A do-or-die game, with defeat ending our season, and victory seeing us into the Semi-Finals.

We were up against a Rhinos side that was in good form, and had improved as the season went on, with many having them as their dark horse to go on and win the competition from fourth place. Meanwhile, the discourse around us was that we couldn’t compete, despite just two points separating us in the table. We’d been written off.

The game, however, didn’t play out like that. A fierce contest for the full 80 minutes, but one that we had never led at any point. As the hooter went for full-time, we were 14-12 down, and that was to be the game.

However, a penalty was given for offside on the hooter. Our captain, Jonny Lomax, kicked for touch, and we would have one play. One play to keep our season alive. One play. Any misstep, and our 2025 would come to an end. Written off. Game called. No chance.

Opportunity.

Never Write Off The Saints.
