Scholars win over the Wolves

Our Scholars recorded a 36-28 win over the Warrington Wolves, extending their unbeaten run!

First Half

A fast start for the Scholars, with Robbie Simpson scoring just five minutes into the game. A play the ball on the right of the field, just in-front of the half way line, the Saints shifted to the left, Barnes found himself attacking down the left, he found Leo Gaskell who ran over the top of his opposite centre, before finding Simpson back inside who raced away to finish off a brilliant team move under the sticks. Captain Finn James converted, 6-0.

Warrington would reply, just six minutes later. After Ben Longstaff was held up at the line by the Saints, a quick ball right to Thomas Heald who dove over in the corner. Harry Pratt converted from the side-line, 6-6

The Wolves would cross over next, to put themselves in the lead with 24 minutes on the clock. A penalty gave Warrington a full set in the Saints 10 metre area. Despite holding out multiple Warrington attacks, the Saints line was finally broken, a short ball to number Isaac Lydon saw him crash under the efforts of the Saints to score. Pratt converted, 6-12.

It would be a strong response from the Saints, crossing over for the next try. With 33 minutes gone on the clock, the Saints started to claw back some dominance, which was capitalized on by Joe Hart. A play the ball just in-front of the half-way line to the left, Hart attacked the short-side, dummied the defence breaking through, before kicking ahead for himself, he won the race to collect the ball ahead of the Wire fullback to finish off a brilliant individual try. James converted, game level, 12-12.

That wasn’t to be the end of the scoring, with the Saints re-taking the lead just before the break. A strong kick-off set saw the Saints enter Wolves territory, with he Saints attacking down their left side again. A smart kick along the floor was fumbled by the Wolves, and Aidan Rawsthorne scooped up the ball before being brough down 10 metres out. The next play, Oliver Knox stormed on to a ball from dummy-half, attacked back behind the ruck and crashed over for his 5th try in 4 games. James converted, 18-12 at the break.

Second Half

It was another strong start to the half from the Saints, crossing over just seven minutes in. On the last tackle, Hart evaded the Warrington kick pressure, before putting the ball high in the air towards the left corner. Kyran Greenall chased the hardest and rose above the Warrington winger to catch the ball, before running in the in-goal to score under the posts to finish off a brilliant try. James converted, 24-12.

The 58th minute saw Warrington go in for their third. A kick charged down by Warrington was alleged to be not played at, giving the Wolves a full set in the Saints half. An attack towards the right edge saw Heald dive over in the corner to score his second. Pratt’s conversion went wide, 24-16.

Just four minutes later, and the Wolves were in again. A penalty presented Warrington a full set in the Saints half again, a play the ball right on the line was picked up by Daniel Marsden who dummied and scored to the right of the field. Pratt this time converted, Saints lead down to two, 24-22.

A strong response came from the Saints. A good set saw Gaskell break down the right, before a carry from Alfie Lyon took the Saints right up to the Warrington line. The ball come left, a dummy and step saw Hart slip through the line to score a well deserves second! James converted once more, 30-22.

Saints would go in again, off the back of a brilliant team move. A penalty got Saints on half-way, after a carry from Kian Redford, the ball was shifted right to left, with Hart finding Barnes, he found Gaskell, who then passed to Mac Finn, he sent Greenall down the wing, who beat two defenders before offloading to Finn inside to score. Hart stepped up with James off the field, and converted the goal to tip off an outstanding individual performance.

Warrington would cross over once more. A strong carry from Daryl Beng was rewarded with a try, after just reaching out to score. Pratt conversion was successful, which after so the final whistle blow, leading the Saints off the field with a 36-28 win!

Our Scholars now enter a break in games as they start to prepare for their upcoming GSCE exams this summer, before returning back to action in the summer. Wishing all the best of luck to our lads for their exams, we are sure you’ll smash them!
