The Saints captain Matty Lees marked his comeback to the match day squad with a hard-fought win away against Hull FC.
After missing around ten weeks, Lees admitted it had been a frustrating period, but he was pleased to be back involved sooner than expected. While he felt some rust in his performance, his main focus was on contributing to the team and helping secure an important win on the road.
It was not a straightforward performance from Saints, particularly in a cagey first half where they struggled to find fluency. There were positive signs in attack, but a lack of cohesion in defence left areas to improve. Despite that, the side showed resilience to stay in the contest and ultimately do enough to get over the line.
Lees acknowledged those areas for improvement, especially defensively, but stressed the importance of picking up wins even when performances are not at their best. That ability to grind out results has been a key feature of Saints’ recent form.
On a personal level, Lees was glad to be back leading from the front. He has always preferred to set the tone through his actions on the pitch, and his return provides a timely boost in both leadership and physical presence.
He also recognised the role Jackson played during his absence, stepping up to lead the side through a challenging run of fixtures and helping maintain standards within the group.
Saints now return to home action to face an in-form Wakefield side, with the focus on improving performances and continuing to build momentum.
