St.Helens R.F.C. pays tribute to John Kear, who sadly passed away on Sunday (31st May 2026), aged 71.
Beloved throughout rugby league, John was a remarkable servant to our sport. He held coaching roles at nine clubs and managed teams over 700 times.
This past weekend, he was part of the BBC’s commentary team for the Challenge Cup Final.
Two of his greatest achievements were leading two unexpected Challenge Cup Final victories. First, he achieved this with the Sheffield Eagles at Wembley Stadium in 1998, defeating Wigan in one of the biggest shocks in the competition’s history. Then, he led Hull FC to victory over Leeds Rhinos at Cardiff in 2005.
As an international coach, he managed France England Wales and the Great Britain Academy.
His legacy will be felt by countless players staff and supporters across the country.

“His genuine love for the game shone through as a player, a coach and a broadcaster.
“A remarkable coaching career spanned over 700 games, and his legacy will endure at every club he worked with, but his passion for the game was palpable and will be fondly remembered by all.
“On behalf of everyone at St. Helens R.F.C., we extend our heartfelt condolences to John’s family, friends and loved ones at this sad time.”
