St.Helens R.F.C. Chairman Eamonn McManus spoke to Sky Sports live ahead of Round 22 at the BrewDog Stadium to discuss our coaching changes, recruitment and Dublin 2027. Saints supporters can watch the full interview, available on demand.
McManus says the Club is determined to appoint the right new Head Coach and strengthen its squad after admitting recent performances have fallen well below the standards expected at Saints.
The Chairman discussed the reasons for a change of Head Coach before 2027, stating it was part of a broader need to change the environment around the First Team, and having the new appointment before the off-season would give them time to influence recruitment for 2027.
Discussing the team’s performances in 2026, McManus acknowledged they have not been where the Club wants it to be, and whilst aware of an astonishing injury crisis that has seen as many as 16 players unavailable at times, the Chairman stressed that the Club must improve and is committed to doing so.
McManus revealed that the Club has been greatly encouraged by both the quality and number of applications received for the vacant Head Coach role, with the search now being narrowed to a shortlist ahead of formal interviews. He reiterated that the Club will not rush the process, with the priority remaining to appoint the best possible coach.
McManus also spoke positively about the prospect of NRL investment in Super League, and whilst no formal proposal at the time of the interview has yet been presented, he believes rugby league in the northern hemisphere has significant, untapped potential for growth with the right investment, leadership and long-term direction.
In some exciting news, McManus confirmed that St.Helens will take on Hull FC in Dublin in April 2027 after agreeing to formal partnership with the Black & Whites. The Chairman expressed his own personal excitement for the event in Ireland, and he believes it will provide an outstanding opportunity to showcase rugby league to a new audience.
