St.Helens Head Coach Paul Rowley spoke to Saints TV during the Good Friday 2026 press event.
Rowley is relishing his first taste of the Good Friday Derby, as Saints prepare to face fierce rivals Wigan Warriors in one of the biggest fixtures of the Super League calendar.
Expecting a typically intense and emotional occasion, with a sell-out crowd, Rowley acknowledged the significance of the fixture from the moment he arrived at the Club, highlighting how important The Derby is to the town and our loyal fanbase.
While preparation remains consistent with any other game, he admitted that the added attention and atmosphere will naturally bring a different edge.
Saints head into the match still dealing with a number of injuries, with sadly no immediate returns expected. However, he is confident that whoever takes the field will be fully committed, and sees the challenge as a valuable opportunity, especially for our younger players, who can gain experience in high-pressure games.
Briefly reflecting on last week’s defeat to Hull KR, Rowley pointed to the physical intensity and speed of the opposition as key factors. He felt it was a difficult experience for a side that has been stretched in recent weeks, but also stressed the importance of learning from it. With a mix of youth and senior players being asked to step up, he expects a response built on improved physicality and resilience.
With a full house expected, the Saints’ Head Coach emphasised the role supporters will play in shaping the occasion. The atmosphere is what makes The Derby special and he is looking forward to seeing his side rise to the challenge in front of our home crowd.
