St.Helens player Jake Burns is hard at work on the field, in the gym and beyond for his rugby league career, but the Saints hooker is also developing his career path for when he steps away from sport.
With the exam season in full swing, many of our younger supporters might be thinking about their future careers, and so are our players. As a club, we encourage players across our teams to prepare for their lives both whilst playing rugby and for whatever can come after.
Jake Burns is a fine example of a player who knows what he wants to do with his career after sport.
The 25-year-old is close to completing his Level 4 Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification, which will enable him to pursue a career within the financial sector, particularly as an accountant. However, following a financial planning session at training, Jake has realised that his career plan can be more specific than that. A conversation amongst players made him realise that he has an interest in working within taxation and tax planning, and this has become the focus of his preparation for his career after rugby.
James Pendlebury, from local firm Livesey Spottiswood, visited the Saints to speak to Jake and our Chaplain and Wellbeing Manager Paul Johnson, about our player’s future career aspirations. James gave some excellent ideas and mentoring to Jake, and he will continue to do so over the coming months to enable him to take the next steps in his journey toward becoming a Chartered Tax Advisor.
As a Club, we are delighted to encourage and support all our players and staff in their plans and preparations for life away from sport, and want to take this time to say thank you to James, and all at Livesey Spottiswood for their mentoring and input into Jake Burns career proression.
