St.Helens' number eight speaks about a coach who was instrumental to his progression as a professional player.
Alex Walmsley says St.Helens are eager to put things right when they take on Leeds Rhinos at Headingley on Thursday night.
Before looking ahead to the game, Walmsley paid tribute to his former coach John Kear following the sad news of his passing last Sunday. Kear played a big role in his early career, helping him make the step from amateur rugby into the professional game. Alex knew John as a man who cared deeply about his players and who was hugely respected throughout rugby league.
On the field, the Saints return to action after a week off and will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing performance against Castleford. Alex admitted the result was hugely frustrating, but said the squad had been honest with themselves during the break and had worked hard to address what went wrong.
Trips to Leeds are always big matches, with two of the competition’s biggest clubs going head-to-head. Walmsley is expecting a great atmosphere at Headingley, with plenty of Saints supporters making the journey across to back the team.
Aware that Leeds will be highly motivated after last year’s dramatic finish in the Play-Offs, Walmsley knows we need to focus on ourselves rather than anything else.
