Saints beaten by the Wolves

Saints were beaten 6-18 by Warrington Wolves in a tight contest at the BrewDog Stadium.

First Half

Saints had the first chance. A penalty pushed the Red V into the Wolves half and a few tackles in, Alex Walmsley tried an offload to George Whitby inside the opponents ten but the ball went to ground.

Twelve minutes into the contest, we had our first trip to the video referee. Off the back of a strong carry from Walmsley, Saints ran it on the last. Jonny Lomax saw a gap and went through it, driving towards the try-line but the ball went to ground under pressure as he tried to spin his way over.

Soon after, Saints did have the lead. After Lomax was forced off with an injury, Tristan Sailor moved to the halves. On the last tackle inside the Warrington 20, he went for a kick and chase and came up with the loose ball to score. He turned his four points into six with the conversion, 6-0 we led.

Five minutes later, we almost had a second try. Jack Welsby threw a cut-out pass to Owen Dagnall who stepped inside to beat Matty Ashton before racing towards the corner. Josh Thewlis did well though to cover and force an error.

Warrington’s best chance of the half came on the half-hour mark. On the last, inside our 20, they opted to run it down the short-side on the last tackle. Thewlis collected it but some strong sliding Saints defence held him up short of the line.

Against the run of play, Warrington scored in the final minute of the first half. Ewan Irwin found Josh Smith with an inside pass, he broke and had Albert Hopoate in support on his outside and he scored in the corner. Irwin converted with the final kick of the half, 6-6 we were tied at the break.

Second Half

Eight minutes into the second half, we had a second trip upstairs to the video referee. Repeat Warrington sets on our line ended with Ben Currie crashing over from close range after collecting Danny Walker’s pass from dummy half. Despite the visitors’ players and fans thinking a try was coming, the on-field verdict of no try was agreed with.

Another chance followed. Sailor’s 40/20 attempt narrowly went out on the full giving the visitors possession in our half. On the last, Walker tried putting in a low kick down their right edge but it was too strong and gave Saints a seven-tackle set.

Minutes later, they did have the lead. A high George Whitby kick bounced into the arms of Smith who raced 70 metres the other way to score. Irwin converted, 6-12 we trailed.

Sailor then broke through a gap down our right edge but his pass towards Dagnall was slightly behind him, however he did claw it in. On the last, Saints forced a repeat set but were unable to break down the visitors defence.

Another chance followed. Whitby’s high kick on the last bounced around, Saints claimed it but threw it to a Warrington shirt and the ball was turned over.

With ten minutes to go, Warrington had a third try. Welsby spilled a high kick inside our ten, giving them a full set. A few tackles in, Irwin got the ball down the right edge and stepped inside onto his left foot, breaking through a gap to score. He converted his own try, 6-18.

Saints claimed the kick off, moving towards the Warrington posts and Whitby tried stepping inside on the last but was held up short of the line.

Warrington were reduced to twelve men for the final three minutes. Ashton fumbled a high kick and Dagnall kicked ahead only to be obstructed by Thewlis, who saw yellow.

No further points happened, 6-18 Saints were beaten at the BrewDog Stadium.
