The Saints can regrettably confirm that George Whitby has sadly suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, which will end his 2026 season.

Our young half-back suffered the injury in the second half of last Thursday night’s Betfred Super League Round 22 match against Hull FC at the BrewDog Stadium.
While the Saints Academy graduate initially tried to play on, he needed to come off the field and, following scans and further assessments this week, it has been confirmed as an ACL injury which will require surgery.
It comes as a bitter blow for the 20-year-old, who had made his return from a two-month lay-off due to a knee injury in the game against Hull FC.
Whitby has played 21 times for his beloved hometown Club, scoring seven tries and kicking 31 goals for a total points tally of 90 so far.
Surgery will be booked in for the former Blackbrook junior as soon as possible, and the Club will continue to give George our full support, with everyone at St.Helens looking forward to seeing him return to match action in due course.
George Whitby said: “I’m absolutely devastated and gutted that my season has come to an end. It’s been a frustrating year personally, but I’m grateful for all my teammates, staff and, most importantly, the fans for their continued love and support throughout the year.
“This is all part of the journey and most definitely a setback, but I’m fully driven and committed to coming back bigger and better in 2027, and I look forward to seeing you all next season.”
Confirming the news as part of his weekly pre-match press conference, Interim Head Coach Eamon O’Carroll said: “It’s really disappointing; it’s the opposite knee to the one he had previously had an issue with, so it’s a real shame.
“We’ve had a good chat with him and got around him. He’s in a good place, positive, although obviously he is very disappointed; he also understands that this is part of the journey.
“The work George does around our environment, how diligent he is with his preparation and the way he lives his life, is fantastic. It’s really unfortunate for him, but everyone’s around him. The Club will support him, and he’s got some good lads around him who will help him through it. George will be better for this experience.”
