Injury update: Owen Dagnall & Kyle Feldt

Owen Dagnall has sadly suffered a hamstring injury, whilst Kyle Feldt has been stood down for this week's upcoming match against Hull KR due to head injury protocols.

Speaking to the local paper St Helens Star, Head Coach Paul Wellens confirmed that young outside back Owen Dagnall has suffered a Grade 3 hamstring injury.

It comes as a bitter blow following a terrific run of form in a breakthrough campaign for the 19-year-old.

Owen made his official debut for St.Helens in the Challenge Cup match against West Hull in February and made his Super League debut away against Huddersfield in Round 12 of the Betfred Super League. Over the summer, ‘Daggers’ featured in the Red V’s last ten rounds, scoring eight and many of them in memorable fashion.

Speaking to the Star’s Mike Critchley, Wellens said: “[It’s] going to mean he will be touch and go for the back end of the season. It is a massive disappointment because Owen, since he has come into the team and played regularly, has done a fantastic job for us. He is certainly a player everyone enjoys watching, and is an exciting player, but he has had an unfortunate blow there.

“He has been exceptional this year. If you watch the games, you would not think he was a young man in his first year as a professional and has impacted the games in such a positive way.

“Whilst it is a huge blow for Owen, it is also one for us as a team as well. Fortunately, we do not think it is a surgical procedure, but he is going to undergo a series of injections that may help promote healing.

“With those types of injuries it is a case of working his way back and give him time to heal while maintaining his rehab to accelerate how quickly he can come back. But with these types of injuries you can never take risks. His return for in and around the play offs is more in hope than expectation but Owen will do all he can to put himself back in contention, but he has got a fair bit to do.”

Meanwhile, the Saints boss has also confirmed that Kyle Feldt will not be available for our visit to Sewell Group Craven Park this Friday night due to failing a Head Injury Assessment (HIA) which was conducted after last Friday night’s victory over Hull FC.

Explaining further, Wellens told the St Helens Star: “[Feldt] took a bang early on in the game but did not feel any ill effects, but after the game he reported feeling unwell and having a headache to the doctor.

“He then failed his SCAT 6 head assessment so we then follow the 11-day concussion protocol, so we will be without Kyle as well.”

Paul Wellens will hold his weekly press conference on Wednesday (27th August) in the afternoon, and will discuss the latest new around his team. Saints TV subscribers will be able to watch it in full.

All at St.Helens R.F.C. wish ‘Daggers’ all the best as he begins his injury recovery, and we look forward to seeing him back on the field. Our best wishes go to Kyle too, as he follows protocols to return to play.
