Known locally as ‘Mr St Helens’, Wellens is widely regarded as one of the best full backs in the world.
Following his domination of the position in 2006 when he won the Man of Steel Award, Players’ Player of the Year, Rugby League Writers’ Player of the Year, Saints' Official Player of the Year and Saints' Supporters Player of the Year, he became more productive last season scoring 24 tries in all competitions.
In fact, it was only the sparkling form of team-mate James Roby, which kept him away from winning the coveted Man of Steel title for the second time.
In 2006, he made his 250th appearance for Saints – putting him in the top 50 all-time list – and scored his 100th try - which includes five hat-tricks, and in 2007 signed a contract that will keep him at the club for the next three years.
