NATHAN Brown says his decision to switch Jonny Lomax to full back wasn’t an inspired one but more based on the youngster’s skillset.
Saints beat Bradford Bulls 36-10 in their own barn with the ‘makeshift’ full back bagging three tries.
Lomax made his debut in that position back in March 2009 and was at the hub of everything his side did on Saturday.
“He certainly played well didn’t he?” Brown said. “Most of the best modern day fullbacks are half backs aren’t they? Billy Slater played in the World Club Challenge last night and look at Ben Barba too.
“They are athletic and can pass, kick and see the game well. It wasn’t a genius move! Paul Wellens got hurt and Jonny was the next best fit.
“Jon Wilkin was good at scrum half too. He has played like a half for a number of years and I remember Mick Potter putting him in that position in a big Cup game at Leeds not so long ago.
“He is an experienced player and has a lot of composure. But both Jonny and Jon are good players who can adapt. What happens when Wello comes back? I can tell you when Paul Wellens is fit he will be playing. Make of it what you will.”
Brown continued: “I thought for the first 40 minutes we played with good discipline and control but in the 20 after half time we let ourselves down with ball control and our discipline.
“They had us under the pump and we had to hang on in there. I cannot fault the effort from the guys over the last few weeks. We did things more consistently for longer today against a side that has been really playing well.
“We are improving all the time, there is no doubt about that. From Round one to two to three to four, we have definitely got better and that is important. I have learnt more as a coach about the players and what works for them.
“We never expected to be at our best at the start. I thought it would be Round 8 when I we would be showing what we can do. I’m sure we will get better this week too.”
Saints face Leeds Rhinos on Friday March 1 (8pm) in what is sure to be one of the best games in Super League this season.
