MIKE Denning joined seven volunteers and support staff to embark on the ASKVAZ Walk for Precky on the May 5 2014 on behalf of the Steve Prescott Foundation.
Starting at Lands’ End and ending at John O’ Groats, the walkers will cover 900 miles in just 12 days to raise money and awareness for the Steve Prescott Foundation.
Established in 2007, the Steve Prescott Foundation raises funds for organisations close to the former St Helens star’s heart, namely the Christie Hospital and Try Assist.
Those taking part will face a gruelling physical and mental challenge, walking 24 hours a day for the duration of their participation in the event, with no overnight stays in hotels.
Mike Denning, business development manager at St. Helens RFC’s sponsors Hattons Solicitors, and a close friend Steve Prescott, explained his personal motivation for taking part in this latest challenge: “I have never in the past shirked a challenge for the foundation, but this will be the hardest physically, mentally and emotionally I have undertaken.
“The reasons for doing this are simple. I have supported Steve in his fundraising since he was diagnosed with his illness and believe in the work the charities he supports are doing on a daily basis. From cycling through France on the Carnegie Challenge to climbing Kilimanjaro in Africa, they have all been very difficult in their own way.
“Those of us that were extremely close to Steve and treated him as a brother have struggled in our own way to cope with his passing and deal with the grief. We miss him every day and keep ourselves active in his name, forever preserving his memory.
“This challenge is certainly one of the most extreme and is completely outside of my comfort zone, both physically and mentally. I am here because I know Steve’s spirit will get me to the end of this and help make this challenge a phenomenal success. I will hold all my memories of the great times I have had with Steve Prescott close to my heart and will shed buckets of tears for his passing on the way.”
The walk is receiving support from across the country and the rugby league community. It will provide yet another inspiring chapter in the story of Steve Prescott’s legacy, ensuring it lives on through the charitable work he continues to inspire.
Hattons Solicitors are also running a live blog of the walk, all the latest action can be followed here.
