KEIRON Cunningham has once again praised his side’s belief and resilience as they enter the final stages of the First Utility Super League season.
Fresh from a dramatic 18-14 win over Wigan Warriors, they face Warrington Wolves at Langtree Park on Thursday.
“It was a real grandstand finish on Friday, wasn’t it?” he said. “We absorbed the pressure and came back with a counter punch. It was a typical Saints-Wigan game. There haven’t been that many points between us this season at all. Last time at Langtree Park it was close until it blew out and it was the same on Friday and on Good Friday until they got a kick try late on.
“It’s testament to how well both clubs are defensively at the moment. We fought for each other and had some massive try savers. Josh Jones caught two high balls – one that stopped a try and one that won the game.
“I thought we were on the back foot for large periods and we gave up possession too easily in the first half.
“But in the second we were really good. The players hung on in there and deserved it.”
He continued: “Who would have thought that four or five weeks ago we would be in this position? We had been written off but great clubs don’t fall off the end of a cliff.
“You have to work hard to get back up there.
“I know people see results but the Giants game was massive for us. The performance was chalk and cheese to the Hull game. I was pleased after the game and people laughed at me. Now we have beaten Leeds, Cas and Wigan. It’s proven that hard work does pay off and we are setting high standards.
“We can’t take this game lightly though. Warrington are wounded. I tipped them for the top three and they will upset at where they are this year. They will want to take a scalp before the playoffs get underway and therefore there is no better time for them to give us a big touch up on Thursday night.”
