KEIRON Cunningham bemoaned his side’s consistency following their loss to Huddersfield at the Magic Weekend.
Saints slipped to a heavy defeat after coming into the match in decent form following four wins from their last five Super League fixtures.
“There were some points in the game when I thought we were pretty good but there is a fine margin in this sport – if you’re not consistent for 80 minutes then you lose the energy battle and get a result like this,” he said. “It is happening too often for us now. We are searching for that consistency as a group.
“We will string two or three good performances together and then we will let ourselves down.
“Huddersfield should probably go out and get a lottery ticket tonight – but you make your own luck. When you see the try in the second half where the ball hit the floor and was kicked up and put down … but they did a great job today.
“We started the better of the two teams but we couldn’t hang on in there.
“We lost some backs from the last game and that hurt us but we can’t use that as an excuse. We had 17 fit bodies out there that should have done a better job.”
He continued: “In rugby league, if you start getting caught up in results, you go away from what you want to do as a club. We are guilty of that at the minute. We are concerned about the result and not the performance.
“When we were consistently successful, for long periods of time, we were always worried about the performance.
“There is still a long way to go in the season but we need to find that consistency. We had patches of it in this game and some fight but we can’t keep going behind by 20 points and start scrapping for the game.”
One thing of note from the game was Calvin Wellington, the young centre who made his debut for the club.
“Calvin is a great talent,” Keiron added. “You can only get experience by playing and he will get better. Defensively he was good and he was lively with the ball.
“The incident that led to their second try doesn’t define his career. I’m happy with how he went.”
