On This Day: Saints beat Castleford in Premiership semi-final in 1977

Each day whilst we are all in Lockdown we will recall a famous Saints moment from the current day thanks to Saints Heritage Society.

14 MAY 1977

Premiership trophy semi-final [second leg]: St Helens 25-13 Castleford at Knowsley Road.

Saints could almost relax, having won 36-12 at Wheldon Road in the first leg. Tries were scored by Eddie Cunningham, Roy Mathias, Mike Hope, Eric Chisnall and Alan Ashton. The immaculate Geoff Pimblett popped over four goals, with a ‘drop’ from young gun Harry Pinner.

A back-to-back Premiership trophy success beckoned after we defeated Warrington 32-20 in the Final. Pictured is Geoff Pimblett holding up his Player of the Year trophy in 1976.
