On This Day: Saints winger flies to France – 1944

Each day whilst we are all in Lockdown we will recall a famous Saints moment from the current day thanks to Saints Heritage Society.

6 JUNE 1944

Saints’ winger and RAF Flying Officer Albert ‘Sonny’ Doyle [see image: front row far right] was a navigator in the RAF and flew to France on D Day in an Albermarle transport aircraft, pulling one of the many gliders that were part of Operation Tonga.

Troops from the 6th Airborne Division in the glider they towed had the objective of holding Pegasus Bridge, one of the things crucial to the success of the whole operation in that part of Normandy.

Brave men indeed.
