Gemma Walsh announces retirement from Rugby League

St Helens' Gemma Walsh has sadly announced her retirement from Rugby League.

The former Wigan Warriors captain made the switch to St.Helens ahead of the 2020 season, but unfortunarly we were unable to see her represent the Red V due to the Covid-19 panemic postponing the Women’s game last season.

Prior to joining Saints, Walsh captained the Warriors since their formation, leading them to Grand Final success in 2018 as they defeated Leeds Rhinos to lift their first major trophy.

Stand off, Gemma also previously captained England, but are now skippered by her wife and fellow Saint, Emily Rudge.

On her retirement, Gemma said: “After picking up an injury in pre season I’ve made the decision to retire. I always said I’d listen to my body and that I would know it’s time. After 21 years playing at the highest level the time is right for me to hang up my boots and enjoy the game I love from the sidelines.

“I am of course gutted I never got to pull on the Saints shirt and play in such a talented squad, but I would like to thank all the players and coaching staff at Saints for welcoming me and I’m looking forward to watching on from the sidelines and hopefully seeing them finally pick up some silverware!”

Saints Women’s Head Coach Derek Hardman said: “It’s been a pleasure working with Gemma over the last two years and it’s a shame we didn’t get to see her in the Red V. I would like to wish her every success in what ever pathway she chooses to take next.”

Everyone at Saints wishes Gemma well in her retirement.
