Academy beat Hull FC: Report and Highlights

Our Saints Academy overcame a spirited Hull FC side at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Saturday and you can watch the highlights and read the match report below.

The Saints started this game in as bright a fashion as the weather at a sun-drenched Totally Wicked Stadium.

Three converted Saints tries in the opening quarter almost, and probably should have, put this game to bed. Unfortunately, FC then woke up and made a very good fist of beating the Saints as the game went on.

The first try came after eight minutes when a pin-point cross-kick on the last from Ellis Archer was plucked out of the air by Rio Corkill for the score.

Joe Woods and Captain Harry Brook got the Saints onto the front foot for the second try on the quarter hour mark. As the ball was moved left Keane Gilford finally stepped inside at the corner to go over. However, the try should have been scored under the sticks as the defensive line just moved left with the ball meaning anyone straightening up would have walked in.

The Saints total dominance was underlined on quarter time. Eliot Peposhi, Ben Lane and George Delaney made ground on the visitors before Daniel Moss took the line on to score on the last.

However, this seemed to spark the visitors into life and in a 10-minute spell they responded.

A very fortuitous, for the Saints, foot in touch denied the left winger a try in the corner before two minutes later they did open their account as the full back easily broke through and won the race to the posts.

Five minutes later and they were in again. Some poor tackling let the visitors through before the right centre took the ball out of Sam Haynes’ hands to go over.

But the Saints hit back. A seven-tackle set, courtesy of a too-strong grubber at the line, was taken quickly by Moss putting the visitors immediately onto the back foot.

Taken on by Peposhi further down the line the sub was stopped short only for Corkill to grab his brace diving over from dummy half.

The second half started as had he first with Joe Woods, having an impressive game, made a 40 metre break down the middle. Unfortunately, he had no support and the attack fizzled out.

The visitors made the Saints pay for some poor defence as the second row went 40 metres to the posts. 10 minutes later and the same player was denied the game leveller due to a forward pass.

But from the restart, with a six again penalty, the Saints again stretched their lead with Moss at the heart of the play. His break and quick play the ball gave the momentum which allowed the charging George Delaney to latch onto a drop-off and streak over.

On the hour the game should have been put to bed. McKenzie Buckley broke down the left. With Moss free and speeding up on his inside he tried to find Alfie Whittle on the wing with a pass that went forward.

Again, FC made the Saints pay scoring on the next possession with an outrageous dummy at the line.

The grandstand finish was set as they scored in the left corner with seven to go. Thankfully, from a Saints point of view the touchline conversion fell short and Saints managed to hang on for the remaining minutes for the win.
